The Ultimate Gift Of Life Foundation
Expands to New Mexico
After a very successful year in Texas, The Ultimate Gift of Life Foundation has expanded to New Mexico. The Foundation was started to help raise the awareness of how someone can help turn a time of loss into a time of hope by becoming an organ donor. One donor can save the lives of 8 people and improve the quality of life of 50 others.
The foundation has asked Judy Mancillas of Cloudcroft to head up the work of the Ultimate Gift of Life in New Mexico. Judy says, “This cause is something near and dear to my heart”. After one year of marriage to Joe Mancillas, Joe was diagnosed with End Stage Renal Failure due to his Juvenile Onset Diabetes and High Blood Pressure. Joe was on Peritoneal Dialysis for 4 years and during that time was on the waiting list for a kidney transplant. Judy said, “It was a challenge to keep up with all the doctor appointments, medications, and strict diet requirements during that time”. Joe was able to work his wrecker business during the day, but was not always able to respond at night. Joe died in an accident before he was able to get a kidney transplant. If Joe had been able to get a kidney transplant, perhaps he would have had better quality of life his last few years.
“I am so grateful and honored for this opportunity to work with The Ultimate Gift of Life Foundation”, said Mancillas. “We are out making sure that if it is your desire is to be an organ donor that you are indeed on the registry. With an increase in the number of registered organ donors , we can help decrease the waiting time for those on the transplant list. The longer they have to wait, there is an chance that when they do find a match they are not healthy enough to undergo surgery.” Mancillas said, “We also want people talking about their wishes when it comes to being an organ donor with their family members. When the time comes, it has already been discussed and it makes it a whole lot easier on the donor families”.
“It has been so wonderful to meet and talk to people who have received a transplant and to see how their life was saved because of an organ donor. They are so very grateful. In talking to family members who have lost a loved one who was an organ donor, they indicate that looking back, it was a decision that brought some good out of a very difficult situation.”
